Consumer Reports noted that a big number of fires are started inside appliances. They recommend that Arc-fault breakers be installed.
But, according to Wikipedia: As of January 2008 .. The NEC requires the installation of Arc-fault breakers in every 15 and 20 ampere residential circuits with the exception of laundries, kitchens, bathrooms, garages and unfinished basements.
But it's kitchens that have the appliances most liable to have an arc, causing a flame.
I had the condo rewired recently, but no Arc-fault breakers breakers were installed. At that time I was unaware of these. (I'm not an electrician but am an EE).
Should I go through and put in Arc-fault breakers? seems like an easy job. Advice?
Sorry, Tex, you didn't address any of my questions. Can I install Arc-fault breakers for kitchen appliances and outlets?

We are remodeling our kitchen and I need some suggestions for colors. Our cabinets and furniture are cherry wood, stainless steel appliances, granite counter in golden persa (white, tan, brown, golds). I like reds, tans, browns, creams, ect. Oh and there isn't a lot of natural light in the room, only 2 windows. Any suggestions for wall colors ect. would be great!

I have wood color pantry off to the side adjacent to the kitchen cabinets (color like this http://www.houzz.com/photos/34865/christian-rice-architects--inc--contemporary-kitchen-san-diego)
And counter and floor tile of cream with specks of brown/tan.
And the appliances are black.
My kitchen cabinet color is currently green with black made to look like wood (it was a modern look in the 70s).
What I want: The wood pantry, tile and counter and appliances will stay as they are. I will to add some sort of red tiles as backs plash between the counter and cabinets (like here http://www.houzz.com/photos/34865/christian-rice-architects--inc--contemporary-kitchen-san-diego , though it will not be this bold red ).
I need help picking a kitchen cabinet paint color that will bring light and space to the kitchen and will go with everything else.
Thanks.
Will it be weird if I paint the wall the same color as the cabinets?
And suggest different color tiles that you think would be better.

I have one son right now who is 6 from a previous marriage. My current husband and I would like to have another child, but we are concerned about space and the location we live in. Our current home is 1100 sq ft, 3 bd, 1.5 ba w/ a two car garage in mixed neighborhood of older summer homes and newer year-round homes. The school isn't very good (rated a 5/10). My son is currently attending a private school for this reason. We'd like to move but we'd lose so much on our home and probably couldn't afford to sell it. Our option would be to rent it out and purchase another home in a better area. Since this home is in my husband's name only, I was able to receive approved to purchase another home in my name only. We don't want to ruin our credit with a short-sale, especially because we can afford our home. It is currently only 10% (mort + property tax + insurance) of our gross income. We are nervous about renting too since there is a chance the renter's would trash our home and not pay. It would be very risky especially if we factor in another child. This home gives us the option of having one of us stay home with the next child for awhile if we pick, but again it isn't in the best area. We do have GREAT neighbors on both sides of us, but two streets over, it isn't great. The homes are a bit run down. People are always making fun of the area we live in and it bothers me a lot. I know the conservative option is to stay put for now, but I don't know if it makes sense to look at this home as "investment property" and then buy something new for our family. If we took that risk though, we would definitely both have to continue working. What makes sense??????????
One other note is that our home now is basically new. It was semi remodeled when my husband bought it (new kitchen, windows, roof) and then we put in new appliances, carpet, remodeled one of the bathrooms and rebuilt the deck. It really is a nice home, just tiny & not in the best location.

This morning when I woke up there was about 100 maggots in the middle of our kitchen floor, and we found a few random others around the home where they had crawled away. We live in the tropics and our home is totally tiled so no carpets... I've checked the trash can, every the food packets in the cupboards, the fridge, inside every of the kitchen appliances (stove, microwave etc), and my husband even got into the roof to look if an animal had perhaps died and they were dropping through the light fittings.... Nothing!!
I've cleaned the entire home and we are still seeing a few little random ones around...
I have NO idea where they are coming from and it's totally grossing me out.
Any suggestions on where they are coming from?!

My wife and I are looking to buy a home for the 1st time. The area where we live is not cheap, and every the houses we se are outdated, and not our style ( Old appliances, kitchen, bathroom, red or green carpets...) while we want a clean clip hardwood floors throughout, marble sinks, and kitchen, stainless steel... So today we were thinking of buying an actual land, then hire a builder to build a tiny, cute home but the way we want it! Now, we are not sure if that would be more expensive or relatively cheaper, how can we finance such a project, since we only have about 10K cash, and looking at financing $240,000 so total budget is $250,000. Thanks in advance for any insights!

What should I ask for in compensation?
I ordered a new Kitchen, cabinets, appliances and a solid surface counter top.from a big box store. When the cabinets were delivered we installed the one U section of the cabinets in my kitchen and were waiting on the counter top installation. We then receive to the next wall and the wall oven cabinet was the wrong size. The store told me I was to modify the cabinet to fit the oven. My husband had to clip into the staples that held the cabinet together to fit the oven per the store. My husband researched it and found out we were sold the wrong size cabinet for the oven we purchased. This was every done on the stores computer with the kitchen designer we paid a fee for.
1) the counter top had a VERY obvious seam that they replaced-(us uninstall and reinstall faucet)
2) The wall oven was the wrong size per kitchen designer(us-uninstall oven after a huge battle trying to modify opening.
3)the dishwasher (brand new) was dented on the inside. (us-install then uninstall dishwasher)
4) they sold me a telescopic exhaust fan that wouldn't even fit in my kitchen., but it was on the computer layout somehow.
5) New replacement wall oven cabinet came in damaged so they had to re order it. They called me set up a delivery within 20 minutes to an hour, after 2 1/2 hours I called and they said oops we made a mistake the cabinet isn't here. They delivered it the next day and it too is damaged. (I didn't notice the warped panel at first) but within an couple hours I called back.
6) The caulk on my sink is the wrong color but I didn't feel like waiting again.
7) The cabinet are white (painted look finish) well now I notice the newest cabinet is also a different hew of white and it is in the middle of 4 cabinets so it is obvious. PLUS this every started 2 days before Thanksgiving. My thanksgiving was ruined my Christmas and my Annual New Years Party. They want to know what I want. What would you ask for?? This is a long held dream project of mine. I want to extend part of my two story home out back. This could make it possible to enlarge two tiny bedrooms and make a third one and give room to improve the master bath. The same addition would have on the first floor a tiny apartment with one bedroom and bath, kitchen, storage space, porch to sit on and sitting room. I read that, if I act as my possess "general contractor, the project's cost would be much lower. Now, if I went to one of those schools for building a home, I could even build some of it myself, but that is not my idea now.
So, do you know if being your possess general contractor significantly reduces the cost of building? Should I just use the average square foot cost of building a home as the probable cost? Does that include the interior finishing and appliances? Have you done this type of project or know someone wh has do one? Thanks.

Could the reason that the Twins and MM hadn't got a clue about how to boil a kettle be down to simply that a kettle is not a standard American household appliance. If a lady invented them than why? What is wrong with vegetables, kitchen appliances, phones and toothbrushes?

My partner and I live in the UK and are looking to upgrade our kitchen giving it a nice new look, replacing our appliances with ones which can be nicely integrated.
It would be preferred to be a single door, however the double doors might be an option.
Are there any where you can replace the doors but still have icy water and/or ice makers/crushers build in. I know I will need to clip a hole in the door and whatnot, but I just can't seem to find one with my very needy vision.
Best Regards,
Tim
Arther, what I meant in my post was to replace the door with a kitchen style door but make a whole for the water/ice dispenser therefore, no altering should be needed for the plumbing and whatnot, I would be replacing the style not the mechanics.
Best Regards,
Tim

We have a yearly lease, and when we renewed our lease last year it went from 685 to 710, reason being in the letter is because of the high cost of their bills and water etc, basically the economy... At the time, they were trying to rent out another apartment in the complex also for 710... Now I look they have another apartment available for 740, and it took them awhile to receive someone, so I'm wondering If they will lift it to 740 as they did last year - match the price they are selling...
Now I know that 740 is cheap, at least in the area we live in, apartments around here go for 1k, BUT they have updated kitchens, appliances etc, so it's not about the money, it's about the fact that we have been dealing with mold, they still haven't painted the kitchen again, and other things still not done, and the showing off when we first moved in of "we will be putting central air into the apartments soon!" never happened... This whole apartment screams 70's and If they were updating it and updating and more swift on maintenance repairs, yes! I wouldn't mind a lift in rent, it would make sense!
But with this mold issue- every apartments have non killer black mold because these apartment master bedrooms have needy insulation- which they managed to clean when we were looking at the apartment- they shouldn't have raised the rent in the first place right?
Thing is, we are in a very safe village, and I don't mind rent increases, but they are installing a bathroom fan to help with the mold problem, even tho it's an insulation problem, I'm sure they will bring up the fact that that was a costly project, instead it's a necessary project since mold grows everywhere! Trust me if it were toxic when they tested it I would leave ASAP! But the nice neighborhood and family only blocks away is a big thing for us, what do u every think? We pay our rent on time every month and keep the place very clean too!
Tom k- none of the apartments have bathroom fans, they said they have to drill through the brick on the outside of the building and put one in, I guess it's a big project, I assume it's more than $50, not sure how much tho?
Adil- that's the thing that PISSES me off! We didn't know mold grew in the apartment as they cleaned it up, and it was summer, the mold came on the bedroom wall far away from the bathroom, and the maintenance guy spilled the beans that they have had mold on this one side of our apt complex forever, and they need to use some very strong harsh chemicals to clean it off once a month in fall and winter, NOT good for my 1 year old to be exposed to!

The Green Thing:
Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older lady that she should bring her possess grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.
The lady apologised and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days."
The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to keep our environment for future generations."
She was right - our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.
Back then, we returned milk bottles, pop bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilised and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.
We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.
Back then, we washed the baby's nappies because we didn't have the toss-away nice. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 230 volts - wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right. We didn't have the green thing back in our day.
Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the home - not a TV in every room. And the TV had a tiny screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of Yorkshire. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't use electricity or petrol just to clip the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right. We didn't have the green thing back then.
We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then.
Back then, people took a bus, and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour cab service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerised gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza place.
But isn't it unhappy the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?
Please forward this on to another greedy old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smart assed young person.

For example: Kitchen Aid. Their stand mixers, toasters, blenders, etc. are available in a wide variety of colors, but their refrigerators, dishwashers, and stoves are only available in white or stainless steel. I realize that in the past people were concerned about their appliances going out of style, but nowadays appliances only last about 10 years, so by the time they would go out of style, you would be ready to replace them anyway. I just think it would be fun to have an orange fridge I guess. LOL.

We bought a new home and there is a ugly white impractical side by side fridge. My husband and I hate it. Additionally we were going to replace the stove and the range hood With an over the range microwave. The cabinet height over the fridge is too short to fit anything bigger than a 18 cubit ft fridge ( we are a family of 4 and looking for a 22 cb ft at minimum) we have the same problem with the cabinet height over the stove, a over the range microwave just won't fit.
So I can try to have the cabinets made smaller over the appliances or have every the cabinets raised up by a few inches. Or just leave it alone until we can afford a full kitchen Reno in 5 + years.

Lately breaker the controls 2 kitchen wall outlets trips if using 2 appliances at once (i.e. toaster oven plugged into one outlet; coffeemaker in the other). This is a new problem; I have lived here 2 years without this issue. The appliances themselves are new and defect-free (I tested them in other outlets). What could cause outlets that previously would operate multiple appliances to suddenly start tripping the breaker?

Please don't use google translate, as I find it is nearly always wrong. Thank you...
I adore being close to shops and I like the city life. It is fun and exciting. I would like to move to London by myself, I would live in an apartment with a pal and go to art school because I adore art, independence and cities. I prefer to live in a big city because there is much to do. Sometimes people toss their trash on the floor. Many people do not recycle. I could turn off my appliances when I'm not using them. I could recycle. I would not live here in the future because there is no university, good shops or nice big flats. _*PLACE*_ is great, but I think there is a very low carbon footprint. There is not much traffic, but on a Thursday, it is difficult to steer on the road because it is the day they collect trash. I would make everyone walk, travel by bike or use public transport. I think pavements should be wider. I always leave my light on when I go to snooze and I don't turn off my computer when I'm not using it. In the evening I clear the table after dinner, after dinner I clean the table and kitchen counters and I make the tea. I have to tidy my room, but sometimes I forget. At the weekend I have to clean the chicken home. Last weekend, I helped to clean the home with my sister.
THANK YOU!!!

I am considering the purchase of a home for sale at 170,000 dollars. I am scheduled to view the home but I have not seen the inside or any pictures of the inside. The description of the home claims that the inside will need some renovations such as new flooring, paint and replacing some equipment on the over ground pool (pool liner). This is our first home and I assume we will also need extra money to furnish updated kitchen appliances and to furnish the home (new sofa, etc.).
How much is reasonable to negotiate to the seller? As I said, the home is listed for 170,000 dollars. It would be a huge help to bring that price down to 150,000 dollars, but is that unreasonable? Please educate me on what would be a decent, fair offer.
Thank you so much for any advice.

I would buy retro kitchen appliances! Sounds greedy and unimportant, but since my current appliances are every less than a year old, I would donate them to a family in need :)
By "decent windfall" I mean about $5,000.
